An Easter tree? Did you make this up?
That I did not. Though I have been asked this my entire life, my family has always decorated one.
Haven’t heard of an Easter tree? This fun tradition is brought to you by the same people who brought you the much more famous Christmas tree – the Germans. Rather than an evergreen, an Easter tree is made from bare branches and traditionally decorated with eggs to represent new life. The eggs are blown out to make them hollow and then painted with beautiful designs.
If you don’t want to go through the trouble of decorating your own eggs (because it can take some time and it is admittedly kind of weird to blow out eggs), there are plenty of ornaments out there. Check out Michael’s, Pier 1 Imports, or Amazon. Either way, feel free to get creative! This year, I added ribbon and artificial flowers to mine.
Tip: If you want to make your own Easter tree, look for uneven branches. If they are too smooth, it can be tough to keep the ornaments from sliding off without extra tape or ties, and we want to keep this simple.
What you’ll need:
- vase, jar, or wine bottle
- branches – These should be on the thin side, especially if you’re using a wine bottle or narrow vase.
- ornaments and other embellishments
- Optional, but recommended: sand, decorative marbles, or other material for weighing down the vase
Steps:
- Put sand or stones in the vase or jar.
- Add branches and arrange. You could paint the branches if you’re feeling fancy.
- Add ornaments.
- Add finishing touches like flowers, ribbon, thin garland, twine, glitter, etc.
That’s it! You’re done! Couldn’t be easier to decorate for spring and celebrate Easter!
